The American Kennel Club announced the most popular dog breeds in America on Tuesday (March 21), and for the 26th consecutive year, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed of dog.

The Lab's popularity should be no surprise, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). The AKC is the largest purebred dog registry in the country.

“The Labrador Retriever has a stronghold on the top spot and doesn’t show signs of giving it up anytime soon. The Lab is such a versatile dog that it’s no wonder it makes a great companion for a variety of lifestyles,” AKC Vice President Gina DiNardo said.

In fact, the top five most popular breeds remain unchanged from last year.

The top 5 most popular dog breeds in the United States are:

1. Labrador Retriever
2. German Shepherd Dog
3. Golden Retriever
4. Bulldog
5. Beagle

So what are the changes in this year's list over last year's list? The Rottweiler (ranked #8 this year) and the Poodle (ranked #7) each moved up one slot in 2016 over 2015.  The Yorkshire Terrier moved down to the 9th slot after being the 7th most popular breed last year.

DiNardo says, however, that the Rottweiler is the breed to watch.

“Keep your eye on the Rottweiler, though. It’s been quietly winning hearts over the past decade,” she said.
