Joni Sledge, who was one of the founding members of the group Sister Sledge, has died. She was 60.
A friend found Sledge dead in her Phoenix home on Friday, according to the band’s publicist Biff Warren. Joni formed Sister Sledge with her sisters (Debbie, Kim and Kathy) in 1971. The band's peak success came in the disco era with their most notable hits being “We Are Family," "He's the Greatest Dancer," and a cover of the song "My Guy."
The band confirmed the news of Joni's death on social media late Saturday. The family requested privacy in the statement posted on Facebook.
A cause of death has not been revealed, but published reports say that the band's manager said the singer was not ill. Sledge is survived by her adult son.
