George Michael died from natural causes, according to a British coroner.

The British pop star died on Christmas Day at his home in England. Officials originally declared the death as "unexplained, but not suspicious" in December. The local coroner revealed today (March 7) that the 53-year-old singer was suffering from a heart condition and fatty liver, the BBC reports.

"As there is a confirmed natural cause of death, being dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver, the investigation is being discontinued and there is no need for an inquest or any further inquiries," Oxfordshire's senior coroner Darren Salter announced in a statement to the press.

The combination of the two heart conditions (cardiomyopathy with myocarditis) means that Michael's heart was enlarged, weakened and inflamed, according to a BBC expert. The causes of the heart condition and fatty liver are not necessarily clear.

The investigation into Michael's death, however, has been officially closed. “No further updates will be provided and the family requests the media and public respect their privacy," Salter said in his statement.
