Kelly Clarkson address divorce and the 'little hearts' of her children

'Definitely didn't see anything coming that came'

September 22, 2020

The Kelly Clarkson Show is back, and since it’s been gone Kelly Clarkson has gone through some major life changes.

On Monday’s season two premiere, Kelly got candid about her divorce from husband Brandon Blackstock, saying ”2020 has brought a lot of change also to my personal life. Definitely didn't see anything coming that came.” Adding, ”what I'm dealing with is hard because it involves more than just my heart, it involves a lot of little hearts. We have four kids and divorce is never easy," she continued. "We're both from divorced families. We know the best thing here is to protect our children and their little hearts."

The usually open American Idol alum decided to refrain from sharing any additional information about the divorce out of concern for the couple's kids. Noting, "I'm usually very open and I usually talk about everything, but in this case I will talk about a little bit here and there about how (the divorce) affects me personally, but probably won't go too far into because, you know, I'm a mama bear and my kids come first.”

After seven years of marriage, Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock, in June, citing “irreconcilable differences” and requesting joint custody of their two children, daughter River Rose, 6, and son, Remington, 4. Blackstock also has two kids, Savannah and Seth, from his previous marriage.

One silver lining to Clarkson’s situation, the break-up song queen is back. Kelly admitted that while she won’t be speaking too much about it, we “will hear it musically probably, that's how I became a songwriter. Music has always been my outlet to help me get through difficult times and this year, I've been listening to a lot of music and I've also been writing a lot of music as well.”
